Joseph Nicholas STEINER
Joseph Steiner's tombstone, and many of his vital records, will show his birth year as 1904. Mom and I think this is
because he entered the Navy before he was of age. Mom told me his older brother, Nicholas, signed for him to go,
since his name was the same as his father's.
Grandpa and Uncle Nick (his older brother) were sent to a boarding school in Lafayette, IN after their mother died.
Grandpa never talked about his family. I remember that he once said that he was born in this country, but the
information from Uncle Nick suggests that he was born in Hungary. Miklos Steiner's (his father) passenger record
indicates that he came in 1907, was married, but had no other entries for his family. Uncle Nick said that they came in
1914 on the Carpathia. I am assuming that the family was separated. After two years of being reunited, Anna Steiner
died, Arthur was adopted, and Uncle Nick and Grandpa were sent to a boarding school. Miklos Steiner's tragic death
with accompanying coroner's report suggests that the Steiner's may have had an unhappy life. Arthur (Joseph Balint)
was also killed in a car accident at the age of 24. Kathy and I think that Grandpa found happiness in his marriage with
Grandma and her family.
