[N130] Rypin

Rypin is a small town in Poland, in the eastern part of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, about 50km east of Torun. It is the capital of Rypin County. Population is about 17,000. It lies in the norh-eastern part of a historical land, known as Ziemia Dobrzynska by the lake Rypienica.

Emblem of Rypin:
Rypin is one of the oldest polish towns. First information about it come from 1065. In the XI century the town became the capital city of a separate political subdivision, and in XIV century a County.
The original localization of the town was on the terrain of todays village Starotypin. It was continuously attacked by different tribes, like the Teutonic Order. The town was completely destroyed by their attack in 1329. The town was rebuild on high ground, where it could be defended in a better way. A peaceful growth of the city took place untill XVII century, when Swedish attacks ruined Rypin as well as many other cities. The town wasnt saved from the Northern War in 1700-1721 as well. After the Second Patrition of Poland in 1793 Rypin was incorporated into the Prussian country. It was returned to Poland after World War I. The time between World War I and World War II was a time, when the town was growing fast. World War II was a dramatic time for the town. At the beginning, in September 1939 bombs hit the town. Many teachers, clerics, Jews, clerks and many more were killed in a house called Dom Kazni, and a local forest was their mass grave. After the war, Rypin, as well as the rest of the country, got under the influence of Russia, and their communistic government. Getting out of that inluence in 1989 gave a new chance to the town.
