Joseph Sliwa
1928-2004
Mr. Joseph F. "Sonny" Sliwa, 75 of Stevensville, Mich., and formerly of Michigan City, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at 4:16 p.m. LaPorte County time at his home. He was born March 19, 1928, in Michigan City to Valentine and Julia (Biernacki) Sliwa. Mr. Sliwa worked for W. Sliwa Grocery and Meat Market in Michigan City. In 1970, he opened Joe's Shady Oaks Meat Market in Bridgman, Mich. In Punta Gorda, Fla., he worked in the Florida State Prison System, then in 1993, he returned to Bridgman where he worked for Harding's Grocery and Meat Market. He was a member of American Legion Post 0225 of Stevensville and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. On June 26, 1971, in Kalamazoo, Mich., he married Dona Moreland, who died in 1995. Also preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Catherine Keen and Sophia Pahs; and two brothers, Stanley and Valentine. Surviving are three daughters, Kim (Scott) Ashbaugh of Portage, Mich., Debra Boehm of Florida and Suzzanne Neils of North Carolina; three stepdaughters, Maureen Grall of Stevensville, Mary Phares of Florida and Eileen (John) Schultz of St. Joseph, Mich.; four stepsons, John Moreland of Indianapolis, Joseph Moreland of Florida, Thomas Moreland of Georgia and William (Debbie) Moreland of Chicago; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Helen Heuer and Jeanette King, both of Michigan City; one brother, Edward of Michigan City.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, with Rev. John Hogan officiating. Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Home, 2626 W. John Beers Rd., Stevensville, MI 49127.
