Jeanette C. King, 89, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 4:30 a.m. in the home of her son. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Walter Rakoczy and Rev. Dennis Blaney officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. A wake service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral chapel. She was born December 27, 1922 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Valentine and Julia (Biernacki) Sliwa. On June 26, 1943 in Michigan City, IN she married Lawrence "Bud" King who preceded her on May 11, 1980.
Surviving are a daughter, Janice Samm of Michigan City, IN; son, Lawrence (Vicki Lain) King of Rolling Prairie, IN; sister, Helen Heuer of Michigan City, IN; granddaughter, Shawna Popp of Westville, IN; 4 great-grandchildren, Krystel (Jon) Bassett of Fort Wayne, IN, Andrew Popp of Westville, IN, Brian Popp of Westville, IN and Stephanie Popp of Westville, IN; and a great-great-granddaughter, Chelsey Bassett of Fort Wayne, IN. She was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Pamela King; son-in-law, Ed Samm; 2 sisters, Sophia Pahs and Catherine Keen; and 4 brothers, Valentine, Stanley, Joseph and Edward Sliwa.
She was a meat cutter/checker at W. Sliwa Grocer and Meat Markets and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister for many years. She also was a member of Marquette Chapter Questers, Catholic Women's Study Club, United Polka Assoiciation, AARP and the Michigan City Senior Center. Jeanette was also a volunteer teacher's assistant at Park Elementary where she started the Brownie Troop and was involved with the Boy Scouts of America.
