Albert J. Golichowski
June 6, 1918 - June 24, 2011
CRUMSTOWN - Albert John Golichowski of Crumstown, 93, died on June 24, 2011 in Peoria, AZ, where he resided since December 2007 with his daughter and son-in-law. He was born in June 6, 1918 in South Bend to Ignatius and Josephine Golichowski. He attended St. Casimir and Crumstown -1.jpgschools, and graduated in 1937 as valedictorian of his class at Woodrow Wilson High School. His is a veteran of the US Navy, serving in the South Pacific in World War II. In 1942 Albert married the former Elizabeth Wincek who preceded him in death in December 2005. His sister Eleanor Golichowski and his brother Edwin Golichowski also preceded him in death. His sister Dorothy Kapsa of South Bend and his brother Gene Henning of Covina, CA survive him. Albert is survived by his two children, Alan (Mary) of Indianapolis and Mary Barany (Michael) of Peoria, AZ. Four grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive him: Anne Damiecka (Tomasz Damiecki) of Houston, David Golichowski of Nicaragua, Lisa Barany of Peoria, AZ, Matthew Barany of Tacoma, WA, and great granddaughter Gabriela Damiecka of Houston. Albert retired in 1983 from Omnicraft Corporation where he created one of a kind trade show displays. Prior to that he built and remodeled homes in the South Bend area and also worked for the Schumacher Company. His life-long passion of wood sculpting was featured in a South Bend Tribune profile (May 3, 2007), in Fine Woodworking Magazine, and a documentary on WNIT TV. He was an active member of the Riverbend Woodcarvers. His collection of Beatrix Potter figures were exhibited at the South Bend Public Library, St. Mary's College, Fernwood Nature Center in Niles, MI, and at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis. His move to Arizona stimulated carvings with a Southwestern theme. Albert was also an avid gardener and serious reader. He embraced new technology, using his computer for reading and research as well as connecting with wood carvers, friends, and family. Internment will be at Highland Cemetery, and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the hospice agency of your choice.
