In 1866, in Poland, Marianna Szymkowiak, 26, married Thomas Pijanowski, 25. (Poznan Marriage Indexing Project) According to the 1880 federal census of South Bend, Indiana, Thomas Pianowski, a brick yard worker, 36, his wife Mary, 37, and their son, Stephen, 12, were all born in Prussia. Thomas Pianowski, 45, died April 27, 1891 and was interred in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, Indiana. (records of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, South Bend, Indiana) On Aug. 29, 1894, Rev. Val Czyzewski, pastor of St. Hedwig Catholic Church in South Bend, married Mary Pianowski and Andrew Matuszak. (image of original record, familysearch.org) According to the 1900 federal census of Warren Township, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, Andy Martuszak (sic), a farmer, born in Poland, immigrated in 1892. His wife Mary, immigrated in 1868. Mary had had nine children of whom one was living.
Andrew and Maryanna Matuszak filed for divorce in 1901 and 1903. The index to divorce records doesn't indicate that either filing was finalized. (sbags.org) Andrew Matuszak died May 9, 1909 in South Bend and was interred in the "Polish Cemetery". (Indiana death certificate) On Oct. 18, 1909, Rev. A. Zubowicz, C. S. C., asst. pastor at St. Hedwig Catholic Church, married Mary Matuszak and Francis Drankiewicz. The marriage applications they filed with the county, indicate that they both had been married before and both marriages had ended by death. (image of original record, familysearch.org) According to the 1910 census record of South Bend, Frank Drankiewicz, a city street laborer, born in Poland, had immigrated in 1880. His marriage to Mary was his second and it was her third. Both Mary and Frank Drankiewicz died at the St. Joseph Co. Infirmary. Mary died Apr. 3, 1920 and was interred in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Frank died Jan. 13, 1923 and was interred in St. Joseph Cemetery in South Bend.
