SOUTH BEND - Julian Walesiewicz, 94, passed away on Saturday, April 30th, at 6:50 p.m. in Hospice House. He was born on October 29, 1916, in Kruszewo, Poland, to Wladyslaw and Juliana (Kolaczkowska) Walesiewicz. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by 11 brothers and sisters. Julian is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maria Para, whom he married on August 19, 1945, in Rensburg, Germany. He fought in the Polish Army when World War II started in Poland. He was captured by the Russians in Drohiczyn in Eastern Poland in September 1939. He was then released by the Russians in exchange for Ukrainian prisoners of war. He remained a prisoner until regaining civilian status on April 27, 1944. He and his wife and 3-year-old daughter then came to the United States on Christmas Eve, 1949. To this union were born their three children: daughter, Cassie Cichon of Swansea, MA, who died on November 3, 1991, daughter, Genny (Leonard) Wojciechowski of South Bend, and son, John (Robin) Walesiewicz of Reston, VA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Janet (John) Tavares, Richard (Amy) Cichon, James (Karen) Cichon, Lisa (David) Kochanowski, Amy (Todd) Trindle, Carolyn Cichon (Dave Gaughan), Adam and Whitney Walesiewicz; great-grandchildren, Kyle and Andrew Kochanowski, Nathan, Nicole and Morgan Trindle, Nolan and Alana Tavares, Mia and Amy Cichon, and Rose Gaughan. "Dziadzi"'s greatest joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in ST JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2011, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Our family would like to extend our sincerest appreciation and gratitude to the doctors, social workers, and especially the nurses at Hospice House who were so kind and loving to my father and to us as a family. We can never thank you enough for all you did to help us get through this very difficult time. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
