South Bend - James J. Ryback, 88, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019 in the Hospice House in South Bend. Jim was born April 11, 1930 in South Bend, to the late Leo & Martha Ryback. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ryback; a grandson, Jonathan Bajdek; brothers, Ronald Ryback and Leo “Bub” (Marlene) Ryback; a sister, Virginia (Robert) Brambert; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Kolo. Survivors of Jim include his children, Lois (John) Bajdek, James A. (Angela) Ryback, and Victoria (Jack) Hammerstein; grandchildren, Bret Bajdek, Logan Hammerstein, and Anthony Ryback; a sister, Delores Kolo; sister-in-law, Barbara Ryback; step-children, Janet Soos, Jeffrey Soos and Ken Soos: step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Jim honorably served his country in United States Air Force. He was a firefighter for over 35 years and retired as a Captain from South Bend Fire Department. Jim was also a parishioner of St. Casimir Catholic Church, and a member of the American Legion Post 357. Jim was a Notre Dame football fan, and enjoyed watching various sports. His greatest passion was being a firefighter. Visitation for Jim will be 10:00 am to 11:00 am Saturday, January 19, 2019 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. with a Military Honor Ceremony at 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am in St. Casimir Catholic Church. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545 or St. Casimir Catholic Church, 1308 Dunham St., South Bend, IN 46619.
