GRANGER, IN - Lillian Lucille Hazen, 95, passed away on October 29, surrounded by her family at home.Lucille was born in Plymouth, Indiana on July 6, 1923 to the late Ethel (Fox) and Jerome Houin. She was the oldest of six children and always had fond memories of her childhood on the farm there. She moved to South Bend in 1943 in order to help with the war effort. Lucille was proud to have been the first woman to work on the floor of the tool room at the Bendix Corporation and considered herself a ‘Rosie the Riveter.' Lucille married Charles K. Hazen (born June 6, 1921), a World War II veteran, on January 8, 1948 at St. Michael's Church in Plymouth. The couple had a lifelong romance. Chuck, as she called him, preceded her in death on November 26, 2001. She was also preceded by her sisters, Nadine Zahm, Margaret Faulstich, and Patricia Pentlow.
Surviving Lucille are her brother, Donald Houin of Argos; and her sister, Eleanor DeSchepper of Breman; as well as her three children, Michael C. Hazen (Linda Hazen) of Ogden Dunes, IN, Jean A. Werntz (John Werntz) of Granger, and Brian K. Hazen of Elkhart. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Andrea Hazen, Erica George, Jeff Qualizza, Jodi Qualizza Meehan, Ehren Werntz, Hannah Werntz Carignani, Phillip Hazen, Daniel Hazen, and Jacob Hazen. Lucille is also survived by nine great-grandchildren. Lucille worked at the Indiana Employment Security Office for 20 years. She enjoyed volleyball, playing cards, gambling, vacationing in Minnesota, and family reunions. Lucille was a spirited sports fan; she grew up cheering on the Detroit Tigers and has followed Notre Dame football and women's basketball and for decades. She had really hoped to see the Fighting Irish win another national championship. She was also an avid reader and completed a crossword puzzle nearly every day. Lucille was also a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church. Lucille's family would like to thank The Center for Hospice Care for their attentive care and assistance, as well as Welsheimer Funeral Home for organizing the arrangements.
