June 6, 1920 - May 31, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Chester "Chet" L. (Wagner) Wegenka, 92, of South Bend, IN, passed away Friday, May 31, 2013, at Sanctuary at St. Paul's in South Bend. He was born June 6, 1920, to the late Walter and Blanche (Klysz) Wegenka in South Bend, and he was a lifelong resident. Besides his parents, also preceding him in death were his wife, Alice, one daughter, Pamela, one sister, Pearl Wharton, and one brother, Al Wegenka. Chet graduated in 1939 from Washington High School. He married Alice Henclewski, his wife of 61 years, until her death on August 20, 2005. He retired from Mar Main Apartments in South Bend after 40 years of employment. Chet is survived by his son, Christopher (Elaine) Wagner of Green Bay, WI; three grandchildren, Allison (Sean Gilchrist) Wagner of Minneapolis, MN, Amanda Wagner of Madison, WI, and Nicholas (Elizabeth) Wagner; and two great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Olivia Wagner, also of Minneapolis, MN. Chet was a former member of Christ the King Parish. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Associates and, through the years, several other organizations. He loved fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed many trips to Wisconsin as well as the 20 years spent at their lake cottage near Marcellus, Michigan. He will be remembered for his unending humor, many funny stories, and his gracious manner. Visitation is from 10 a.m. - 12:00 noon, Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Funeral services begin at 12 noon at the funeral home, followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Center for Hospice Care St. Joseph County, IN; and/or St. Mary's College Summer Academy, South Bend, IN. Chet's family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at Sanctuary of Holy Cross and Sanctuary at St. Paul's as well as Center for Hospice Care for their care and support over the past four months.
