Donald Marion Niezgodski, 73, of North Elliott Street, South Bend, Ind., beloved husband, father and grandfather, died at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, in the Memorial Hospital emergency room. He was born Nov. 9, 1928, in South Bend, to Marion and Mary (Bednarek) Niezgodski, who have preceded him in death.
On Jan. 6, 1951, in South Bend, he married Sophia (Jankowski), who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Julie (Kim) Pastrick of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Jane Nielson of South Bend; two sons, Jim and Jerry Niezgodski, both of South Bend; two grandchildren, Brett Pastrick and Nicolette Pastrick, both of Flagstaff; and by a sister, Virginia Kovach of South Bend. Mr. Niezgodski graduated from Central High School. He served for six years with the U.S. Navy Seabees in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from the South Bend Police Department as a detective sergeant, was a member of F.O.P. Lodge #36, a member of the board of directors for American legion Post 50, a past commander and past 3rd district commander, and (presently) senior vice commander of V.F.W. Post 8748. He served on the City Council and was a former Common Council president. Donald was deeply committed to issues that affect the quality of the South Bend community. People who have met him knew how much he cared about bettering the life of others, always eager to give a helping hand where needed. He was a generous father, compassionate husband and doting grandfather. Donald enjoyed retirement, camping and fishing with his wife at Oliver Lake in LaGrange, Ind. Friends and family may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 6, in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S.
