South Bend - Gary Szmanda, 74, passed away Monday, May 13, 2019 with his wife by his side. Gary was born December 4, 1944 in South Bend, to Leo & Thelma (Irvin) Szmanda. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 step-grandchildren; sisters, Joan (Harold) Burger ad Jane (Glen) Robinson; and brothers, Jim (Gloria) Szmanda, Jack (Delores) Szmanda, and Tommy Joe Szmanda. On October 23, 2004 Gary married Patricia (Walgenbach) Szmanda, she survives along with his son, Jerry (Dianne) Szmanda; daughters, Sherry (Kevin) Klein, Kari (Al) Parnell; step-children, Kevin (Tracy) Johnson, Russell (Samantha) Johnson, Sheila (Josh) Mahler; 13 grandchildren; Jean (Bill) Cybulski and Sandra Paprocki. Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He returned home and worked as an underground wire installer for AT&T for 33 years. He was a member of the Lydick United Methodist Church. Gary was President and a lifetime member of the Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club, past member of the Lion's Club, and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, freezing vegetables, and cooking. Gary also enjoyed woodworking which he was very talented at. Most of all, he loved going on drives and dining out with his wife. Visitation for Gary will be 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2019 in the Lydick United Methodist Church, 26510 Edison Road, South Bend, IN 46628 with a Funeral Ceremony to begin at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. is assisting the family. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Lydick Methodist Church or Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
