Ernest L. Butts, residing in Granger, passed away very peacefully, at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010 in his home, with his loving wife and nephew at his side. He was 86 years old. He was born April 10, 1924 in Delavan, IL, a son of William & Mary (Pistole) Butts, and has resided in the South Bend area since 1965, coming from Illinois. He enlisted in the United States Army March 18, 1943, and served for three years during WWII. He was honorably discharged on February 20, 1946. Following the war, he was a farmer and an apprentice at Caterpillar Tractor Co. before joining IBM in 1954. He was promoted to Field Manager in Chicago in 1958, and to Branch Manager in 1965. He retired in 1984, following 30 years of service to IBM. On May 15, 1970 in South Bend, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Frey. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years. Also surviving are three daughters, Carol Heinen of Oak Park, IL; Janine Dettman of Flippin, AR; and Alayna Thomas of Brazil, IN; and one son, Steve Clark of Riverside, CA. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister in law, Betty (Jack) Maffitt; two special nephews, Tom Maffitt and David Maffitt; and a very special lifelong friend, Jane Amerman of Heyworth, IL. Ernie was a very loving husband, a caring, generous and gentle man who loved his church, his home and family. He especially loved children. Ernie was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend, where he served as Lector, Eucharistic minister, served on numerous committees, as well as Church Council. He also organized the children's charity golf tournament at the church. He loved playing golf, loved his home and working in the yard. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the Center for Hospice Care, especially Chris Pettitt, and to Eddie Runnion, his home caregiver.
