Charles Edward Nellis, age 88, residing in South Bend, Indiana passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Memorial Hospital after a short battle with illness. Charles was born on August 26, 1934 in Upstate New York to Raymond and Josephine (Van Note) Nellis. He is preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, his wife Sophie, and his son Steven. He is survived by his son Scott of South Bend, Indiana. Also surviving are his daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Steven) Nellis, and granddaughters Cortney Nellis and Melanie Nellis, all of Mishawaka, Indiana. Charles, known as Eddie to his family, was born and grew up on a farm in Upstate New York. Charles served in the Army before marrying Sophie Ogden on February 13, 1960 in North Collins, New York. In 1966, Charles and his family moved to Lockport, Illinois where they lived for 16 years before moving to South Bend, Indiana in 1982. Charles was a truck driver for over 30 years, working for Murphy Motor Freight, Preston Trucking, and Holland. Charles has been retired since 1996 and was very proud of his accomplishment when he became a part of the Million Mile Club. For many years, he enjoyed frequenting local restaurants where he loved to talk to waitresses and waiters, as well as going to his favorite store, the Dollar General. Charles’ family was the highlight of his life. There will be no services at this time. Palmer Funeral Homes - Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
