SOUTH BEND - Vincent Piper, 95, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2013, in Dujarie House, Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, Indiana. Vince was born August 23, 1918, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Max and Albertina (Chimanski) Piper. He is survived by two children, Michael Piper of Haslett, Michigan, and Connie Renaldi (Charles) of Elkhart, Indiana; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a son, Robert Piper, and a grandson, Carl Renaldi. Following the death of Vince's mother, his father, having no one to care for his children, placed Vince at the age of five in the Hebrew National Orphan Home, Yonkers, New York, where he remained for ten years, after which he resided in Brooklyn, New York, until he entered military service in 1942. Vince always considered himself to be a New Yorker, and read the New York Times daily until shortly before his death. Vince was a World War II veteran, having served with honor in the U.S. Army from February 1942 to December 1945 as an administrative and technical clerk in Australia, in the Army Post Office in New York City, and at the end of the war in Camp Shanks, New York, where he was assigned to guard duty over a group of German SS prisoners. He achieved the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal, World War II Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and American Theater Service Medal. Following the war, Vince earned a Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, while working nights as a foreman on the Ford Motor Company freight docks. He also earned a Master's degree from Wayne State. He spent the remainder of his working life in charitable and public service administrative positions, including Lima District Tuberculosis Hospital, Lima, Ohio; Society for Crippled Children, Columbus, Ohio; Community Chest, South Bend, Indiana; and over twenty years with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Washington, DC, as a director and inspector of public housing, elderly housing, Native American housing, and community services, until his retirement in 1983, when he returned to South Bend to be near his family. Throughout his life, he made friends wherever he went, and his wisdom and humor are legendary, as well as his hats, walking canes, and book collection, his prominent nose and his white hair. He was often seen in the downtown South Bend area, pretend sword fighting with anyone who crossed his path. An Open House celebrating Vince's life will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013, from 5:00-10:00 PM at Houlihan's Restaurant, 4240 N. Main Street, Mishawaka, Indiana. .
