Alvin Edgar "Juke" Thompson, 82, passed away at 8:10 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Healthwin Specialized Care. Mr. Thompson was born on June 22, 1928 in Granite City, IL to the late Alva and Mabel (Nicholas) Thompson. He has lived most of his life in South Bend and Mishawaka. On December 29, 1951 in South Bend, he married Mary Katherine "Kate" DuBois who preceded in death on March 6, 1972. A daughter, Kathleen A. Thompson, and a brother, Donald Viduka, also preceded in death. Mr. Thompson is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John R. and Cecilia Thompson of Granger; two grandchildren, Ryan Thompson and Jennifer Mais; great grandson, Ian Mais; sister, Dorothy Selby of Mishawaka; and three brothers, Raymond (Patricia) Thompson of Mishawaka, Richard Viduka of Phoenix, AZ, and Allen "Butch" (Eileen) Viduka of South Bend. Mr. Thompson retired from Royal Rubber Company in 1990 after over 35 years of service. He was a quiet, gentle man, always exceedingly polite. Mr. Thompson was very inquisitive about the world, a voracious reader, frequently enjoying two newspapers a day and his apartment was filled with many books. He read mostly nonfiction, history, WWII, Civil War, and old west but also enjoyed contemporary non-fiction. Mr. Thompson never attended college but became a big fan of Indiana University and enjoyed attending Indiana University football and basketball games for over 30 years. He also loved theater and movies. "Gone with the Wind" was his all-time favorite movie. Mr. Thompson served his country during WWII with the United States Army.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 2, 2010 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev. Ed Erskin will officiate. Military graveside services will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, August 1st, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel. Mr. Thompson's family would like a special thank you to Uncle Ray and Aunt Pat for all of their care and thoughtfulness thoughout the years. Many thanks to the nurses and staff at Healthwin for taking such great care of Dad the past few months.
