Maria Schirripa passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, May 22nd, surrounded by her loving family. Maria was born on July 28th, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 6 she moved to Italy with her family. October 6th, 1946, Maria married her true love, Salvatore. In 1966 Maria and Salvatore returned to America, establishing a home for their six children in South Bend, IN. She will forever be remembered for her love and generosity towards those around her. She was an amazing cook, always spoiling her family, friends and neighbors with her delicious Italian meals. In addition to her love for cooking, Maria had a passion for gardening. She was especially proud of her beautiful flower garden, which adorns the front of her home. Through her garden Maria showed her infinite capacity for selfless love, and in return she was enriched by the joy her beautiful flowers brought to others. Maria helped raise each and every one of her 16 grandchildren who loved her dearly. As a devout Catholic, she, along with a group of friends, became very passionate in restoring Our Lady of Monserrato Church, which was the only church in that area. The church was located in Calabria and had been damaged during World War II. Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Salvatore Schirripa; her sister Venera Verteramo; her brothers, Castigliano and Girolamo; and her loving grandson, David. She leaves behind her 6 children, Giuseppe (Darryl Vergonet), Domenico (Kim), Anthony (Theresa Humphrey), Rose Parisi (Luciano), Carmela Macri (George), and Gerry Schirripa. She will be forever loved and remembered by her grandchildren: Maria, Tony, Cecilia, Mike, Joe, John, Ashley, Blake, Torey, Lisa, Matthew, David (deceased) Vinnie, Anthony, Adriana, and Michael. She also leaves behind 17 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Stacie Cole & Jeannie Poole for their love and care. Donations in Maria's name may be made to Saint Hedwig's Parish or Center For Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2014 in St. Hedwig Church, with Rev. Camillo Tirabassi officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, where a rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m.
