MISHAWAKA - Joseph E. Katona Jr., 60, of Elmwood Avenue, died of natural causes at 4:45 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mr. Katona retired in 1983, as president and owner of La-Rite Roofing & Insulation Co. He was formerly employed by Indiana Bell Telephone Co. He was born March 26, 1934, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident. On June 23, 1957, in South Bend, he married Joyce Root. She survives with two daughters, Karyle "Kari" Green of Carmel, Ind., and Khoral "Kori" Katona of South Bend; a son, Joseph E. III of Mishawaka; four grandchildren; his parents, Esther and Joseph Katona of South Bend; and a brother, Jack of Granger.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, South Bend, Michiana Roofers Association, Northern Indiana Gun Collectors Association, Ohio Gun Collectors Association, Michiana Steelheaders Association, DeAmicis Club, B.K. Club and a former member of Morris Park Country Club. He was a veteran of the Indiana National Guard. Services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday in Hahn Funeral Home.
