Raymond D. Plencner, 73, of South Bend, IN, died Friday, April 15, at 10:30 a.m. in Memorial Hospital from complications of prostate cancer. "Ray"/"Daddy"/"Grand-dad" will be remembered most as a man of strength, loyalty, integrity and love who valued God, family, and country above all else. His life was a reflection of these deeply-rooted character qualities and his legacy reflects the selfless devotion to those who were blessed to know him. Raymond was born Feb. 5, 1932, to Thomas and Cecilia Plencner of South Bend. His brother, Ervin, preceded him in death. Ray grew up in St. Stan's Parish and graduated from South Bend Catholic High in 1950. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean War, he attended the University of Notre Dame where he graduated in 1960 with a BA in Business Admin. He worked at Studebaker in South Bend from 1960 to 1965. In 1965 he joined the former Miles Laboratories (Bayer Corp.) in Elkhart as a personnel administrator. He retired from Bayer in 1994.On October 15, 1955, Raymond married the former Delphine M. Cwidak, who survives him. Also surviving are their four children, Anita Armstrong of Bay Village, OH, Bonnie Rice of Loveland, OH, Mary Diane Deysher of Springboro, OH, and Mark Plencner of Plymouth, MI. He also leaves three sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law and 15 grandchildren. Raymond enjoyed his retirement years with Delphine at Diamond Lake in Cassopolis, MI. They also spent several winters in Gulf Shores, AL. Ray enjoyed his leisure time reading, fishing, golfing, cheering for the Irish, and "fixing things." He devoted his hands to service. He was involved in the Helping Hands ministry at St. Pius X Catholic Church. He volunteered at the U.S. Naval Air and Space Museum in Pensacola, FL, restoring aircraft. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Disabled American Vets. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a combined parish vigil service and Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Friends may also visit from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, in St. Pius X Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, in St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, IN. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Right to Life, Inc., of St. Joseph County, 320 N. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN, 46601; to The Center of Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the St. Pius X Building Fund, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, IN 46530. We will remember Ray as a devoted husband, faithful father, grandfather and friend. He was a self-sacrificing provider, and set a high standard for those who follow after him. In his own hand, he wrote the following words about the most important lessons he has learned in this life: 1) Trust in the Lord. Have faith in His Holy will and your direction will always be true. 2) Be honest and forthright in dealing with people. You may get "burned" occasionally, but sleep will come easily. 3) Examine the facts... consider the alternatives... make the decision you feel is best... DON'T VACILLATE and stick to your guns until proven wrong... then admit your error. 4) Be loyal, do your very best in your work and play and "don't bite the hand that feeds you." 5) Be prompt and timely... it's better to be 10 minutes early than 3 minutes late for anything. Our lives are better for those lessons he learned, lived and passed on.
