Carl Gene Whitaker, 69, of South Bend, died Sunday afternoon, March 7, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in South Bend on Oct. 4, 1951 to Chizzie Whitaker and Evelyn (Borlik) Whitaker-Strootbandt .He graduated from Jackson High School in 1970. Carl worked as a skilled tool and die maker for more than 40 years. He was formerly employed by Adams Tool & Die, South Bend; Craft, South Bend; EPW, in Elkhart. Carl was officially retired but he was on call when a company needed his expertise. He was proceeded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Armand Strootbandt, and a sister, Joan Albaugh. Many weekends you would find Carl helping his mother setup her craft booth and giving his advice on the best way to display her work. Carl lovingly cared for his mother in their home for a number of years until her death in 2007. He is survived by his sister, Eileen Weston, of Granger, Ind.; niece, Julie (Jon) Gray, of Granger; nephews, Ron (Ida) Albaugh, of Mishawaka; Charles (Lisa) Albaugh, of Edwardsburg, Mich.; Robert (Mary Ellen) Albaugh, of South Bend, and many great nieces and great nephews. Carl enjoyed a round or two of golf at Blackthorn. He always looked forward to his weekly golf league or visiting antique stores with sister Eileen. He loved spending time with family and friends. Above all, he was the one who would help family and friends. With careful planning, he assisted the nieces and nephews fulfill their college dreams. Carl had a sixth sense about helping others. He did so much for so many people without a second thought. Family was very important to him. His family and friends were very blessed to have him in their lives. Visitation for Carl will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at St. Joseph Funeral Home at 824 S Mayflower Road. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 12 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 S. Mayflower Road. In lieu of flowers you may make donations, in Carl’s name to the American Cancer Society.
