SOUTH BEND - Edward Ewald, 99, passed away at 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 in Southfield Village. Edward was born on December 1, 1911, in South Bend. On June 17, 1939, he married Bernice in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. They enjoyed 61 years together before her passing on December 16, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his four sisters; and three brothers. He is survived by his niece, Elaine Gish of South Bend and by his great-niece, Kathie (Brian) Krieg of South Bend. Edward attended St. Hedwig Grade School, Washington High School, Night School and Vocational School. After graduation, he honorably served his country in the United States Army as a crewman 325th AAA S/L BN and was in the Pacific Theater from August 1943 to January 1945. He was a member of American Legion 284. He worked for Physic Mach Shop for 25 years at Notre Dame. He also worked for Singer Sewing Co for 20 years and for Bendix for 4 years. Edward played his saxophone in numerous Polish Bands for over 45 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Young Men's Society. Visitation will from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. January 15, 2011 in ST JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd, where a Funeral Liturgy will begin at 3 p.m. Services will conclude in the Funeral Home. Entombment in Resurrection Gardens, St. Joseph Cemetery will take place at a later date. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net
