Mary Cecilia Battista, 89, residing in South Bend, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2012. She was born in Indianapolis, IN on June 5, 1923 to the late James and Nora Gavaghan. On October 18, 1947 in Indianapolis, Mary married Peter A. Battista, who survives. In addition to her loving husband, Peter of South Bend, Mary is survived by two sons, Bob (Gogi) of South Bend and Pete (Beth) of St. Joseph, MI; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Angie, Joe, Nikki, Katie, Danny, Amy and Shelby; ten great grandchildren, Aidan, Nora, Keira, Colin, Mia, Hunter, Alexandra, Kaylee, Ava and Cora; as well as one sister, Ann Nolan, and one brother, Jim Gavaghan, both of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Kay Conroy; sisters, Eileen Meiners and Kate Gawrys; and brothers Bob and Frank Gavaghan. Mary truly exemplified the Irish qualities in her daily life for love of family and a deep faith in God. She adored all her family and friends, and loved spending time with all of us, especially her grandchildren. Mary had the rare quality of making everyone feel that you were the most important person in the room.
Mary retired from the University of Notre Dame after eighteen years with the Financial Aid Department. She was an active member of Christ Child Society and Christ the King Catholic Church, where she volunteered a lot of time and talent over the years.The Battista family would like to thank the staff of Your Home Assisted Living in South Bend for their care of our mother during the past year and a half. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Monday, September 24, 2012 in Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 Indiana 933, South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame.
