SOUTH BEND - Abraham Goetz, 91, passed away on Tuesday May 9, 2017 at home with his family. Abraham was born April 8, 1926 in Grybow, Poland and spent the war years in Kazakhstan, returning to Poland after the Nazi defeat in 1945. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Janina, two sons George and Victor, daughter-in-law Lisa and grand-daughter Alexandra. Abraham earned his Ph.D. from the Mathematics Institute of the Polish Academy of Science in 1957 and his Habilitation, a sort of second Ph.D., from the University of Wroclaw in 1958. From 1952 to 1965 he held various faculty positions at Wroclaw. In 1962 he was a visiting faculty member at the University of Notre Dame, becoming a regular faculty member in 1965. For many years he directed a National Science Foundation sponsored program for highly qualified high school mathematics teachers to earn a Master's degree in mathematics. He published a high level text in differential geometry, and did research in geometry and universal algebra. He also directed a number of Ph.D. theses. Abraham retired from Notre Dame in December 1999. He was an active member of Sinai Synagogue, where he served on the Board of Directors for many years. He also enjoyed his participation in the Talkers forum. Funeral services for Dr. Goetz will be at 2pm TODAY, Thursday, May 11, at Sinai Synagogue, corner of LaSalle and Eddy St., Rabbi Michael Friedland, officiating. Burial will follow at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Mishawaka. McGann Hay Funeral Homes, Forest G. Hay Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to Sinai Synagogue,The Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley or to the University of Notre Dame.
