Joseph M. Sauer was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, March 31, 1866, the son of Mathias and Elizabeth (Weiland) Sauer. The family moved west and for a time they lived at Rice and Cold Spring, Minnesota. In 1889, he came to North Dakota and settled on a homestead in the Foxholm area. He married Katherine "Katie" Riehl. Joseph and Katie had six children:
