SOUTH BEND - Albert Henri "Belgie" Vander-hegghen, 98, passed away with family at 12:20 pm Friday, December 5, 2014. He was born on February 25, 1916, in Gent, Belgium. Albert served in the Belgium Military and came to the United States on the Queen Elizabeth in 1948 with his wife, Louise. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, and a son, Paul, and his wife Louise, and two grandsons, Scott and Marc. Albert is survived by two sons, Andrew "Gus" (Joyce) Vanderhegghen and Jim (Dot) Vander-hegghen; two grand-daughters, Crystal and April; five great-grand-children, Brandon, Brandy, Alicia, Cierra and Nadia, and two nephews, Pierre Vanderhegghen and Benzamien Broeck-hoven, both in Belgium. Albert enjoyed playing his accordion, drawing, and riding his bike with his wooden shoes. His favorite places to go were Bonnie Doons, Tom's Restaurant and Top Notch. Albert worked at Studebaker until they closed, and then to Allied Stamping where he retired at the age of 65. Funeral services will be celebrated at 1:00 pm Wednesday, December 10, 2014, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 11:00 am until the time of services in the funeral home.
