Thomas “Dan” D. Whelchel, 54, of Bristol, died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 10:30 pm at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, Indiana. He was born October 24, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Thomas D. and Mary (O’Malley) Whelchel, Sr. On May 13, 1995, he married Linda L. Stryjewski in Lansing, Illinois. She survives along with 4 sons Matthew Whelchel and Zachary Whelchel, at home; Tom (Kyungson) Whelchel of South Korea, and Eric Whelchel of Hobart, Indiana; 2 daughters Angela (Marat) Kagan of Gurnee, Illinois, and Katherine (James) Thompson of Champaign, Illinois; 4 granddaughters; 3 brothers James (Pat) Whelchel of LaCross, Indiana, Joe Whelchel of Largo, Florida, and Michael Whelchel of Chesterton, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Steve & John Whelchel and a sister Judi Wolf. Mr. Whelchel worked as a mechanic for Cardinal Buses in Middlebury. He was previously employed at Weldbend Corp. in Bridgeview, Illinois. He was a member of the Bristol United Methodist Church, and enjoyed golfing and bowling. Visitation will be Friday from 2-8 pm at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd. Elkhart where services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday. Reverend Fred Stayton of Bristol United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery, Bristol.
