Alex "Al" Tomaszewski

SOUTH BEND - Alex "Al" Tomaszewski, 88, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 3:00 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2013, in his home. Al was born on October 12, 1924, in South Bend, to Alfonso and Christine Tomaszewski, and was a lifelong resident. He had been employed for 22 years with the Studebaker Corporation. After Studebaker's closed, he went to work for A.M. General for 23 years. Al was also an usher for the University of Notre football, hockey, and men's and women's basketball programs. He had also been an assistant groundskeeper at Coveleski Stadium for 16 years. On April 25, 1952, in South Bend, he married Fern W. Miller, who preceded him in death on November 11, 1983. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Carrie Bykowski, Molly Kozakiewicz, Susan Griffin and Toby Tomaszewski; four brothers, James, Nicholas, John and Walter Tomaszewski; and by his companion, Elizabeth Baker. Al is survived by three daughters, Susan (Mike) Chrapliwy, Kathryn Tomaszewski-Brook and Mariellan (Bruce) Weaver, all of South Bend; four sons, Stephen, Martin (Judy), John (Patricia) and Alan Tomaszewski, all of South Bend; eighteen grandchildren, Joshua (Ginger) Chrapliwy, Jason Chrapliwy, Jonathon Chrapliwy, Jeremy Chrapliwy, Kandace (Adam) Demeyer, Ken "Ashely" (Stacey) Brook, Kailey (Richard, III) Hanna, Amanda Weaver, Jennifer (Kevin) Dews, Matthew Tomaszewski, Linda Tomaszewski, Kelly (Cory) Whitman, Megan Tomaszewski, Brandon Tomaszewski, Erik Tomaszewski, Stacey Tomaszewski, Raymond Molchan and Kathleen Molchan; and fifteen great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Joseph, Ashton, Maddison, Payton, Rhylann, Matthew, Isaiah, Camden, Cory, Cohen, Kevin, Joey, Cameron, Kassie. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Thursday, September 19, 2013, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. today, and for one hour prior to services on Thursday in the funeral home. Al was an avid Cubs and Notre Dame fan. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, and family holidays. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, Inc.
