Joseph was born in Kapuvar, Sopron County, Hungary as son to Joseph Gerencser and Elizabeth Lengyel. He has one known sister, Theresa Gerencser, who married Joseph Nyerges (from Veszkeny, Sopron County, Hungary).
On August 7, 1905, Joseph A. Gerencser married Anna M. Nagy in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana.
