MISHAWAKA - John F. Galasso, 72, passed away on Monday, November 30, with his loving family by his bedside. He was born in Elkhart, IN on May 21, 1943 to the late Anthony and Frances (Ballotore) Galasso. On October 9, 1965, he married the love of his life, Lorraine Zurat, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka. John is survived by his wife, Lorraine; son, Jim (Kirsten) Galasso of Edwardsburg, MI; daughter, Lynn (Mike) Garrett of Zionsville, IN and four grandchildren, Nick Galasso, Jake Galasso, Kaitlyn Garrett and Cassidy Garrett. Also surviving are his sisters, Bernice (Emil) Doczy of Palm Bay, FL, Anna Lazzara of Granger, Joan (Bill) Spencer of Edwardsburg, MI and Norma (Bill) Wisser of Granger, IN, and several nieces and nephews. John retired as a Captain from the South Bend Fire Department in March 1999 after 28 years of service and then from South Bend Equipment Services in 2009 following 10 years of service. He served as president of the St. Monica Catholic Church ushers and was an active member of the St. Monica Conference of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. John also worked as an usher at Notre Dame University. The greatest joy in John's life was his family. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and supported them in all of their endeavors. As an avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren on the athletic fields and on the courts. He was always their number one fan. John loved to play golf and watch sports, especially Notre Dame football, the Chicago Bears and the Cubbies. The family would like to thank Dr. Folstein, Dr. Mahone and the many skilled and caring doctors and staff at Memorial Hospital of South Bend and Saint Joseph Health System for their loving care. Visitation will be on Friday, December 4 from 2 to 7 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., with visitation an hour prior, on Saturday, December 5 in St. Monica Catholic Church, Mishawaka with Monsignor Bruce Piechocki officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph PRC Cemetery in South Bend.
