[N13521] New salon, old memories Bella Mia owner welcomes back longtime resident September 19, 2008|VIRGINIA RANSBOTTOM Tribune Staff Writer

Diane Dandino (Delphines daughter) She was raised at Delphine's Salon on Huron Street in South Bend. Delphine Dandino had been a hair stylist for 50 years. Like her mother, Dianne put as much love in her salon as she did her home. Both the Kuhn and Dandino families sat down together and proposed a toast to a house full of old memories and the beginning of new. As they began to chat, they found they had much in common. "We used to sit out on the front porch and swing with pop," said Kuhn's daughter, Barb Timby, of Three Rivers. "He worked at Torrington." "My husband, John, had been the president of the union at Torrington for 30 years!" exclaimed Delphine. "They must've known each other." Kuhn's daughter, Laurie Highfield, of Mishawaka, said school and St. Joseph Church were in walking distance. "We went to St. Joseph Church!" said Delphine, startled again. "But we couldn't walk across Lincoln Way by ourselves," said son Tom Kuhn, of Carmel, Ind. "So when we wanted to come home from Lincoln Park we had to stand across the street and yell, 'MOM!'" Highfield also walked across the street to a high school pal's home that is now Hacienda Restaurant. That's where the family was taking Kuhn for birthday dinner. Kuhn's daughter, Sue Bieganski, of Osceola, said their mom had also walked to work at May Fair restaurant to help put all four children through college. Kuhn still keeps active as a volunteer at Queen of Peace School. After Kuhn's hair styling appointment was finished in what was once her living room, she looked in the mirror. "Oh, I wish my husband could see me now!'" Kuhn said. "I'm sure he can, Mom, I'm sure he can," smiled Bieganski. Salon Bella Mia is located at 817 Lincoln Way W
