CASSOPOLIS - Bernice E. Kozlowski, 80, of West Peninsula Drive, Shavehead Lake, Cassopolis, MI died Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at 1:39 p.m. in the Lakeland Medical Center, Niles, MI, after an extended illness. She was born on May 31, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Herbert and Esther (Lutz) Patz Sr., and had moved to the Cassopolis area in 1969, coming from Chicago. Bernice married John R. Kozlowski Sr. on January 9, 1958, in Chicago, and he survives. She is also survived by a son, James M. (Debra) Kozlowski of Cassopolis; three stepgrandchildren, Brad Prince, Amy Bateson and Chad Prince; two step-great-grandchildren, Chelsi Bateson and Mariah Bateson; and a sister, Marie Uher of Oak Brook Terrace, IL; two brothers, Theodore Patz of Gardner, KS, and Jerry Patz of Tiskilwa, IL. She was preceded in death by a son, John R. "Jay" Kozlowski Jr. on October 10, 1990; a brother, Herbert Patz Jr.; and by two sisters, Rose Harper and Madelyn San Filippo. Bernice was a retired meat packer with the former ESI Meats in Bristol, IN. She had also worked as a sorter with the Pioneer Seed Company in Constantine, MI. Bernice attended St. Ann Catholic Church, Cassopolis. She was a member of the Three Rivers Eagles Aerie #2303. Bernice loved playing bingo and going to the gambling boat. She was known as a "people person," and loved spending time with her family and friends. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at 10 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church, 421 N. Broadway, Cassopolis. Officiating will be Fr. Donald G. Potts, pastor. Interment will be at Shavehead Cemetery, Porter Twp., Cass Co., MI. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Connelly Funeral Home, Cassopolis. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
