SOUTH BEND - Francis J. "Ponzo" Hahaj, 88, of Mishawaka, died at 2:40 A.M. on Friday, June 13, 2014, at West Bend Nursing Home in South Bend. Francis was born June 19, 1925, in South Bend, to the late Walter and Hedwig Hahaj. He was also preceded in death by three sisters: Bernadette, Mary, Angela; and six brothers: Ben, John, Ray, Gene, Lenny and Louis. Surviving are one daughter, Anne (Dave) White of Mishawaka; two sons: Thomas (Debbie) Hahaj of North Carolina; Michael (Pam) Hahaj of Bridgman, MI; ten grandchildren: Stephen, Stephanie, Sarah, Kelly, Justin, Wesley, Patrick, Beth, Susan and Casey; and 34 great-grandchildren; and two step-grandsons, Michael Dan and Kevin White. Francis was a tool and die maker for Martin's Tool and Die prior to his retirement. He also worked for a while at Studebaker's. He was also a member of St. Bavo Catholic Church and attended St. Stanislaus School. Francis also served his country in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during World War II. He was one of the brave soldiers who stormed the beach at Normandy on D-Day. He loved bowling, golf, playing cards, fishing and cars. An accomplished dancer, Ponzo also enjoyed music and playing the harmonica. He never met a stranger and was an outgoing individual. Visitation for Francis will be held Tuesday, June 17th, from 2 to 4 at the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St., Mishawaka, where services will be held at immediately following visitation. The family would like to thank Milton Day Services for Alzheimers and Dementia and the special caregivers at West Bend.
