LAKEVILLE - Gerard J. Szymczak, 73, of Lakeville, IN passed away at 6:00 a.m. Sunday, December 7, 2014 in his home. He was born on October 4, 1941 in South Bend, IN to the late Joseph Walter and Henrietta Frances (Opaczewski) Szymczak. On September 5, 1964 in South Bend, IN he married Barbara (Beitler) Szymczak, who survives. Mr. Szymczak is also survived by his daughter, Dawn Szymczak of Lakeville, IN; son, Glenn Szymczak of Chicago, IL; and three brothers, David (Pat) Szymczak of Rochester, IN, John (Susie) Szymczak of Newark, OH and Mel (Debbie) Szymczak of Osceola, IN. Mr. Szymczak was a lifelong resident. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was employed as a forklift driver for AM General, retiring in 1996 after thirty years of service. Mr. Szymczak was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 63568 U.S. 31 South, South Bend, IN. Monsignor John Kuzmich will officiate. Military graveside services and burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville is assisting the family with arrangements. Contributions in memory of Gerard J. Szymczak may be offered to Northern Indiana Food Bank, 702 Chapin St., South Bend, IN 46601. Online condolences may be sent at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
