SOUTH BEND - Walter Stanley Zultanski, 96, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2015, after a brief illness. Walter was born on April 16, 1919 in South Bend to the late Stanley and Zofia (Lubelski) Zultanski and was a lifelong area resident. Walter married Shirley (Norris) on August 3, 1946. Shirley preceded him in death on December 22, 2009, as did their daughter, Bonnie J. Hurley on April 7, 2010. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Irene and Dolly Zultanski and Shirley Klosinski; and by three brothers, Sylvester "Gully", Bill and Matthew "Hank" Zultanski. Walter is survived by his daughter, Carol (Charles) Copley of Osceola, IN. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Joy, Jay, Shannon, Sean and Ryan. He also has six great grandchildren, Olivia, Davin, Winnie, Brian, Owen and Mary. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps, Company 515, Indiana-Kentucky District, headquartered in Medaryville, IN in the late 1930's. He enlisted in the U.S. Army (1941-1945) during World War II and served in the Pacific Theatre; assigned to Hawaii, New Guinea, Philippines, Corregidor, Manila Bay, just to name a few. His unit became known as the Avengers of Battan when they drove the Japanese Army out of the Philippines. When the war ended, Walter returned to South Bend and was employed at Studebakers for 12 years. He then worked as a baker at the Pick Oliver Hotel in downtown South Bend. He was also employed as a chef at the Elks Club, Golden Sands in Michigan City and Hans Haus Restaurant in South Bend. Walter was a kind, caring, respectful man who devoted his whole life to his family. His wife and daughters were singers and he enjoyed watching them perform. He drove his daughters all across Indiana and Michigan to perform because he knew how much they enjoyed singing. His grandchildren and great grandchildren meant the world to him. Everyone who knew Walter thought he was one of the nicest people they had ever met. He never had an unkind word for anyone. He was always very pleasant and considerate of others. He was definitely a man who could be trusted and everyone adored him. You will always be the best husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and you will be in our hearts forever. Walter will leave a void in the lives of many and will be missed by everyone whose life he has touched. We love you so very much. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be on Thursday, July 2 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev.
