SOUTH BEND - Joan E. Rekos, 91, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away early in the morning on Saturday, December 16th, 2017. Mother was born in South Bend to the late Edna (Gibson) and Herman Sharpsteen. On October 30, 1950, she married Mario K. Rekos, who preceded her in death after 62 years of marriage on May 25, 2012. Surviving Joan are her six children: Elizabeth Lewis Farr, Soula (Greg) Tyler, Maria (Larry) Bonnell, Michael, James and John Rekos. Mom and Dad were blessed with eight grandchildren: William (deceased) (Jackie) Lewis, Sarah (Jason) Binder, Laura (Alex) Griffis, David Ryan (Jillian) Bonnell, Zachary, Jacob and Miles Rekos and Cassandra (Colin McCan) Rekos. Also surviving Joan are four great-grandchildren: Matthew, Jordan, Parker, and Connor. Also, she leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and she loved them all very much. Our Mother was an avid reader and always stressed the importance of education. She loved reading to and spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren. Joan was a graduate in the class of 1944 at South Bend Riley High School. She received her Bachelor's degree from Kalamazoo College. She then obtained her teaching credentials and a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University. She taught in South Bend Schools for 20 years. The family will receive visitors from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 20th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home at 521 N. William Street, South Bend, where a Trisagion service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, 52455 Ironwood Rd., South Bend. Mother's final resting place will be at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial donations to Milton Adult Day Services, 922 E.
