NEW CARLISLE - Velmer J. Potthast, 99, of New Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. He was born November 14, 1911, in Pierron, IL, to the late Henry and Ida E. (Koch) Potthast. On June 18, 1938, he married Helen T. Radecki, who survives. He is survived by his daughters, Sister Barbara Jean Potthast of Campbellsport, WI, JoEllen (John) Dresbach of South Bend and Carol (Jim) Bratina of Greenwood, IN; three sons, Father Richard Lee Potthast, C.S.C. of Uganda, Africa, Charles (Susan) Potthast of Indiana, PA and John (Meg) Potthast of South Bend; eight grandchildren, Annette Dresbach, Robert (Denise) Dresbach, Daniel (Romy) Dresbach, Jason (Angie) Bratina, Julie (Steve) Sidhom, Emily Potthast, Eric (Tara) Potthast and Lindsay Potthast; nine great-grandchildren, Christopher, Brian and Justin Dresbach, Gianna and Christian Bratina, Kyle Sidhom, Liam Suggs, June Potthast, Jaxton Bush; two sisters, Mary Potthast of Wheaton, IL and Imelda "Millie" Bosshart of Buffalo Grove, IL; and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Potthast of Peirron, IL. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Erin Burkett and Amanda Potthast; one great-grandchild, Cecelia Burkett; two sisters, Valeria "Fay" Goestenkors and Eleanoor Goestenkors; andy by three brothers, Raymond, Clarence and Marcellus Potthast. Mr. Potthast worked for Bendix Corp. for 30 years and retired in 1972. After retirement, he returned to his hometown and enjoyed gardening and fishing any chance he got. He was a loving, hardworking, husband, father and grandfather. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 pm Sunday, October 16, 2011 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 5 pm. Funeral services for Velmer will be held at 11 am Monday, October 17, 2011, in the funeral home, where friends may visit for one hour prior to the service.
