The Sizzle and Fizzle of Round Oak Stoves
Michigan History Magazine
March 1, 2004 | Jesse, Hillary Whitcomb | Copyright
"I can remember the day I was hired," said retired ironworker Pete Laszynski, recalling June 1, 1937. "It was a hard job, hard work. We made castings for the stoves--Round Oak stoves, Round Oak furnaces and heating stoves, and eventually electric stoves. In the wintertime, the lines would be frozen and we were not able to work at all. In the summertime it was just vice-versa. You would perspire so that your clothes would be all wet, with sand." Laszynski was one of thousands of men and women who made stoves under the name Round Oak for a company founded by Philo D. Beckwith in Dowagiac, Michigan. By the early twentieth century, Beckwith's company was reputed to be the largest heating stove company in the United States. Company historians were not exaggerating when they wrote, "P. D. Beckwith and the Round Oak stove were to Dowagiac what Henry Ford and the Model T automobile were to Detroit."
