SOUTH BEND - Patricia I. "Pat" Gillespie, 84, of South Bend, passed away Thursday morning, February 24, 2011, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, with her family in attendance. Pat was born September 15, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest of four daughters of the late Terence and Mary (Burns) Hughes of County Down, Ireland. She grew up in Chicago where she graduated from Providence High School. On May 6, 1950, Pat married Francis P. Burke, who preceded her in death on July 4, 1950. She later married Daniel John Gillespie of Donnegal, Ireland, on January 15, 1955. He passed away on April 29, 1983. Pat moved to South Bend in 1956 and had lived in the South Bend/Mishawaka area ever since. Pat was employed at Goldblatt's, Sears and retired from Crime Stoppers where she was their first administrator. She had been a member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka since 1966 where she belonged to the Rosary Society and volunteered as a money counter. Pat was a member of Goldblatt's Luncheon Club, and in her earlier years in Chicago belonged to the Young People's Club with both Daniel and Frank. She loved reading, was an avid bowler, and had a beautiful singing voice. Pat's family was a big part of her life. Those left to cherish her memory are seven children, Daniel Gillespie of Aurora, IL, Timothy Gillespie of Boulder, CO, Mary Anne Kepschull of South Bend, Maureen Connors of Grabill, IN, Terrence Gillespie of Mishawaka, Patricia Gillespie of South Bend and Michael Gillespie of South Bend; sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husbands, Pat was also preceded in death by three sisters, Sister Marie Terence (Rosemary Hughes), Margaret Hawley and Grace Gleason. Friends may spend time with Pat's family today (Sunday) from 2 - 6 p.m. in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. Friends may also spend time with the family Monday from 9 - 10 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Monica Church, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Contributions in Pat's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Society . Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home. Pat's family is grateful for the care she received the past four years at The Sanctuary at Holy Cross, South Bend.
