SOUTH BEND - Donald N. Cukrowicz, 'Don Sugar', 78, passed away at 1:32 pm on Monday, November 22, 2010 in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Don was born on July 2, 1932 in South Bend to the late Stanley and Carrie (Kruszka) Cukrowicz. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Ervin and Arthur; and by his sister, Alice (Bill) Kapsa. On September 19, 1987 he married Marcy (Kasprzak) she survives, along with his children, Donna (Steve) Pareja of Sartell, MN and Patrick (Michele) Cukrowicz of South Bend; five grandchildren, Amanda, Stephanie, Jennifer Cukrowicz, and Rebecca and Alexander Pareja; sister, Dorothy Nowostawski of South Bend; and by two sister-in-laws, Alice Cukrowicz of Mishawaka and Louise (Lou) Livengood of South Bend. Don honorably served his country in the United States Army as an Infantry Sergeant during the Korean Conflict. He retired from South Bend School Corporation as an Engineer after 37 years of service. Don enjoyed restoring Model "A" Fords, but his biggest passion was playing the accordion and his orchestra. He started playing accordion professionally at the age 14. For the next 51 years he was known as "Don Sugar". He was the first Polka band in South Bend to record a record. Don Sugar's Orchestra played for countless wedding receptions and other special occasions. Don was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, November 26, 2010 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 27, 2010 in St. Casimir Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association , P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
