Stanley Stepanek
1919-2005
Mr. Stanley A. Stepanek, 85, of LaPorte, died Monday, March 7, 2005, at 2 p.m. at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers, Michigan City, after a brief illness. He was born May 6, 1919, in LaPorte to Stanley and Marie (Garbowski) Stepanek, and was a lifelong resident of LaPorte. Mr. Stepanek was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a rural carrier for 38 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Holy Name Society, and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the North African Campaign and being wounded in action in Tunisia. He received the Purple Heart. On June 12, 1943, in LaPorte, he married Sophia A. Russ, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Nancy (Jay) Bunton of Charlotte, N.C., and Chris (Florian) Predd and Sue (Steve) Manering, both of LaPorte; three sons, Fred of Florida, Randall (Susan) of Fort Wayne and Chip (Theresa) of Tennessee; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ted of LaPorte.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary; and six brothers, Michael, Walter, Steve, Casimir, Julius, and Fetz. A funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Friends may call at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m.; and Friday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, with a graveside military honor service.
