SOUTH BEND - Arthur J. Kubiak, 78, of South Bend, passed away in his residence on May 30, 2011. Arthur was born April 21, 1933, to the late Martin J. and Rose (Kalamaja) Kubiak in South Bend, Indiana. On November 12, 1955, Arthur married the former Ms. Shirley Parkhurst. Shirley preceded him in death, passing away November 28, 1997. Surviving are his daughters, Deborah (Richard) Barton of South Bend, IN, Pattie (Steve) Barnes of Bay City, MI, and Kathleen Allen of South Bend, IN. Surviving as well are his siblings, Leonard Kubiak of Torrance, CA, and Kay Ivankovig of LaPorte, IN; and a sister-in-law, Lorna (Julius) DeMaegd of South Bend, IN. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Kelly (Tracy) Larges of Bay City, MI, Virgil Chapman of South Bend, IN, Jeremiah (Sabrina) Chapman of Goshen, IN, Brandy (Rick) Huff of South Bend, IN, and Matthew Paskell of South Bend, IN; and four great-grandchildren, Becca Badour, Kennedy Larges, Austin Mann and Isaiah Chapman. Arthur was preceded in death by his grandson, Nathan "Bubba" Paskell; his brother, Dick Kubiak; sister-in-law, Marianne Kubiak; and brother-in-law, Paul Ivankovig. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where VFW Post #360 will perform military honors. Arthur served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Marine Corps, before his honorable discharge in 1953. He was employed by Drewry's Brewery in Mishawaka where he worked in the lab, Midland Engineering, Carlisle Nursing Home, and retired from the maintenance department at Marian High School in Mishawaka in 1995. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling in the City leagues, collecting football and baseball cards, and traveling with his wife, Shirley. Arthur was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears, and Notre Dame football. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Center for Hospice.
