According to John Prawat’s naturalization record he was born on Apr 26, 1850 in Germany/Poland and resided at 1017 West Dunham Street, South Bend, Indiana. His United States census records indicate that he immigrated in the 1870s.
John Prawat married Josephine Rajder on May 14, 1878 in South Bend, Indiana. Val Czyzewski, CSC, officiated. In 1880, John and Josephine were living at 901 Dunham Street, both had been born in Prussia. She died on April 27, 1888, at the age of 27. Two children survived her, Cecelia born in 1882 and Helen born in 1885.
John Prawat married second, Rozalia Wrobel Zaworski, on August 8, 1888 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Michael Lauth, CSC, officiated. [Rozalia also had been married before. She had married Stanislaus Zaworski on August 22, 1881 in St. Joseph County, Val Czyzewski, CSC, officiated.)
In 1900, the household of John and Rozalia Prawat, at 1017 West Dunham Street, included the two daughters from his first marriage; a daughter and son from Rozalia’s first marriage, Wladyslawa [aka Lottie] and Joseph Zaworski; and five children from their marriage: Bronislawa, Jadwiga [aka Hedwig, Hattie], Josephine, John [John J.], and Antoni. The St. Hedwig Catholic Church record of interments in Cedar Grove Cemetery includes Bronislawa Prawat’s death on August 8, 1901.
By 1910, John and Rozalia had had two more children, Edward and Bronislaw [aka Bert]. John’s two oldest daughters, Cecelia and Helen, were living together on Chestnut Street and working at a shirt factory.
Cecelia Prawat, and Wladyslawa and Joseph Zaworski, all married in 1911 and 1912.
The St. Hedwig Catholic Church record of interments in Cedar Grove Cemetery includes Rozalia Prawat’s death on October 6, 1916, Antoni’s on November 3, 1916, Edward’s on January 26, 1918, and Hedwig’s on July 11, 1919.
At the time of the 1920 census, John Prawat, 70, and three of his children, Josephine, John, and Bert, were living at the family home at 1017 West Dunham.
The South Bend Tribune, published Mon., Aug 23, 1920 reported John’s death:
“The funeral of John Prawat, 72 years old, who died Friday...at his home, 1017 West Dunham street, was held...at St. Patrick’s church.... Burial was in Cedar Grove cemetery.” Josephine, John J., and Bert Prawat all married in the 1920s.
