Bernadine “Bernie” M. DeGeeter, 73, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16 after a nine year struggle with cancer, in Hospice House, South Bend.
Bernie was born on March 26, 1942 in South Bend to Joseph and Irene (Jaronick) Grontkowski. She was preceded in death by her parents.
On September 17, 1966 in St. John the Baptist in South Bend, she married Delbert DeGeeter. He survives along with three children, Timothy J. (Pamela) DeGeeter of Parma, OH, Debra Ann (Troy) Homan of Nappanee, IN and Jennifer (Paul) Baldwin of South Bend; five grandchildren, Paul Baldwin IV of Jacksonville, NC, Sabrina L. Lusk, Keith R. Lusk Jr., Jack T. DeGeeter and Molly M. DeGeeter and a sister, Rita Grontkowski of Mishawaka. Bernie graduated from Washington High School, Holy Cross Central School of Nursing and University of St. Francis. She was a parishioner of St. Bavo Parish for many years and served as a nurse in various areas, including Head Nurse for the Newborn Nursery at St. Joseph Hospital and at the Family Children’s Center on the Children’s Campus. As per her wishes there will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, June 19 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Bavo Catholic Church with Rev. Barry England officiating.
