SOUTH BEND - James Lee Szmanda, 82, passed away on Thursday, June 22, 2017 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born May 26, 1935 in South Bend, to the late Leo and Thelma (Irvin) Szmanda. On February 2, 1957 in St. Peter's Church of LaPorte, James married his loving wife Gloria (Molden) Szmanda, she survives along with their children, Pamela Szmanda, Connie (T-Bone) Jones, James “Jimbo” (Kimberly) Szmanda, Susan (Joe) Karnes; grandchildren, Kelsey (Andy) Bogard, Melissa Jones, Makayla Karnes, Alexandra, Gabriella & Josephina Szmanda; siblings, Jean (Bill) Cybulski, Sandy Paprocki and Gary (Pat) Szmanda; brother-in-laws, David Molden and Dan Molden. Jim honorably served his country in the United States Army Military Honor Guard. He was a truck driver for Dick & Company and Preston Trucking until retiring in 1996. Jim was the president of Warren Township Little League, Mayor of Lydick, and a member of the American Legion Post 284. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and Polka music. Jim was a Notre Dame, Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He was a very talented woodworker and famous for making horseradish and polish sausage. Visitation for Jim will be 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday, June 26, 2017 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. A Private Entombment Ceremony will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery.
