George Edward Herendeen died of recent health complications, on Thursday, October 6, 2022 in South Bend, IN. He was born in Elkhart, IN, on October 29, 1935 to Ralph D. and Frances C. Herendeen, who preceded him in death. In 1958, George married Kathleen (Savage) Herendeen, who preceded him in death in 1986, and was the mother of his children. He was also preceded in death by his son, Timothy J. Herendeen, and a sister, Phyllis Koscielny. George is survived by three children, Barbara M. (Victor) Michalos of South Bend, IN; Michele L. Munoz of Lakeland, FL; and David Ty Herendeen of Mishawaka, IN; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. George is also survived by his brother, Herbert T. (Mary Ann) Herendeen of South Bend, IN; a dear friend, Michele A. Foster of South Bend, IN; and many nieces and nephews. George attended St. Vincent Grade School in Elkhart, IN, and Wawasee Preparatory School for Boys in Syracuse, IN, from which he graduated with honors and served as the president of the Wawasee Alumni Association. He graduated from Marion College and Valparaiso University School of Law, with a Juris Doctorate degree. After law school graduation, George went to work for the Associates Investment Company in South Bend, IN, as an Assistant General Counsel and continued in that capacity for ten years. In the interim, in 1968, he was elected South Bend City Judge and served as a judge of that court for four years and was its last sitting judge. While on the bench, he served as secretary of the Indiana Judges Association. Prior to his election, he was a member of the Young Democrats of St. Joseph County and served as its secretary. After leaving the bench in 1972, George joined the law firm of Voor, Jackson, McMichael & Allen and, presently, that firm bears his name as Herendeen, Kowals & McTigue, located in South Bend, Indiana. In his early years after law school graduation, he was involved in many civic and social organizations. He was the president of the Home and School Association of St. Anthony de Padua Parish in South Bend as well as the president of its school board. He was a district director of the Boy Scout Council in South Bend. Until he was elected a judge, he was an active member of the Indiana High School Athletic Officials Association and worked as a basketball official in northern Indiana. George was a member of the Indiana Judges Association; St. Joseph County Bar Association and served as its President in 1997; Federal Bar Association of the Northern and Southern District of Indiana; and the Seventh Court of Appeals. He was a member of the Notre Dame Alumni Association and the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley. During his 52 years of practice, he served as a deputy prosecuting attorney and an assistant county attorney. He was a member of Catholic Social Services board of directors and its president for four years, as well as a life member of the Elks Club and the South Bend Country Club. His favorite place in the summer was his Donnell Lake cottage. George loved entertaining at the lake and was known for his famous barbecue ribs and taking friends and families skiing, tubing and on boat rides around the lake. George was an avid Notre Dame fan and spent countless hours following ND sports.A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, October 28, 2022 at Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Graveside services and interment of ashes will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00am-3:00pm on Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.
