MISHAWAKA - Dorothy A. Van Pelt, 81, passed away on Friday, January 20th in her home after an extended illness. Dorothy was born on October 19, 1935 in South Bend to the late Michael and Mary H. (Horvath) Kovatch. She was married on May 2, 1970 to Louis Van Pelt in South Bend. Louis preceded her in death on May 11, 2003. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her brothers, Michael and Paul Kovatch, her son, William M. Lowry and her son-in-law, Larry Platz. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Susan M. Platz of South Bend and her son and daughter-in-law, Robert R. (Brenda) Lowry, Jr. of Mishawaka; granddaughters, Lacey Platz and Kathryn (James) Waymouth; and great-grandchildren, Sophia and Callum all of South Bend. She loved being with her family, especially her loving grandkids, being with friends, going out to eat, playing bingo and she loved animals. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 24th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel” located at St. Rd. 23/Ireland Road, South Bend. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 PM in the funeral home with Pastor Tim Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend. The family request memorial contributions be made to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to the Shriners Hospital for Children Chicago Unit, 2211 North Oak Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60707-3393.
