SOUTH BEND - Former Indiana House Representative, Thomas S. Kromkowski, 69, of Cassopolis, MI (formerly of South Bend, IN) passed away at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles, MI, following a long battle with cancer. Kromkowski represented the West Side District of South Bend for 26 years, before retiring in March of 2006. In addition to serving as an Indiana State Representative, Tom worked for AM General for 29 years until he retired in January of 2004. The South Bend native was born on September 2, 1942 to Bert and Virginia (Buzalski) Kromkowski. His father, Bert "Bronco" Kromkowski preceded him in death. Tom graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1960 and then on August 10, 1963 he married his long-time sweetheart, Janeen K. Beard at St. John the Baptist Church in South Bend, IN. She passed away on August 15, 2002. He is survived by his mother, Virginia Kromkowski of Cassopolis, MI; daughter, Julie (Kromkowski) McSweeney (husband Michael) of Atlanta, GA; son, Greg Kromkowski (wife Misha) of Dallas, TX; and four grandchildren, Sean McSweeney of Atlanta, GA, Tyler, Rex, and Kate Margaret Kromkowski, all of Dallas, TX. Tom was a U.S. Army Veteran, who served in Vietnam from 1967-1968. He was a parishioner at St. Stanislaus Parish in South Bend, a member of U.A.W. Local #5, AFL-CIO and MR Falcons Nest #4. As the representative for the West Side of South Bend, Kromkowski worked to represent the interests of working, middle-class residents. He was a friend to police, firefighters, teachers, and other organizations of South Bend in an effort to make his district stable and successful. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2011 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 12, 2011 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Mathews, C.S.C. officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conducted.
