James Edward Berta
Empire - James Edward Berta, of Empire MI, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2021 at the age of 83, after a traumatic fall and stroke. Jim died peacefully with his wife Delores and family members by his side. He was born in South Bend, IN on June 26, 1937, and preceded in death by Julius and Irene (Raab) Berta. Jim leaves behind his brothers and sisters, Robert, Paul Allen,Mary, Patricia, Joseph, Nancy and Daniel. A member of St. Joseph's Parish growing up and a graduate of St. Joseph's High School Class of 1955. He went on to serve in the Army. He had a long career at Wheelabrators until its closure. He was an expert craftsman building clocks, shaker style boxes and furniture. He was a long time vendor at The Johnny Appleseed Festival in Fort Wayne, IN. He built his three story lake house at Pearl Lake. He is survived by three of his four children Theresa, Susan, Edward and Francis (1968-2001). Susan and Kevin Israel are the parents of his three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michelle, and Stephanie. He also leaves behind four great grandchildren, Peter, son of Elizabeth, and a girl to be born in September, Anthony and Gregory sons of Michelle. Jim really enjoyed making his shaker boxes and teaching his granddaughter Stephanie woodworking skills. He also loved fishing.Published in South Bend Tribune from Jun. 12 to Jun. 13, 2021.
