Norbert S. Wasikowski, 94, of Granger, Indiana, formerly of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 12:20 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2018 in his home, with family surrounding him. Norbert was born on August 3, 1923 in South Bend to Stanley C. and Anna (Woloszyn) Wasikowski, and was a lifelong resident. He retired after 42 years of employment as an Engine Designer for Aircraft at Bendix/Allied-Signal. On June 19, 1948 in St. Adalbert Church, he married Gloria E. Slaby, who preceded him in death on November 7, 2013. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Alice Kopczynski; and his brother, Leonard Wasikowski. Norbert is survived by his four children, Dennis (Denice) Wasikowski of Granger, Indiana, Jim (Marlene) Wasikowski of Granger, Indiana, Randy (Fran) Wasikowski of South Bend, Indiana, and Michele (Mark) LaCosse of Granger, Indiana; eleven grandchildren, Heather (Jason) Howard, Kristin and Tara Wasikowski, Daniel Wasikowski, Laura (Kyle) McKinley, Stefanie Foley, Ann and Aaron Wasikowski, Jenae (Joshua) Newberg, and Bryce and Austin LaCosse; two great-grandchildren, Preston and Killian Howard. Norbert was drafted at the age of 19 into the United States Army. He served in the 141st Field Artillery Battalion of the United States Army during W.W.II in Africa, Italy, and France. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded in France. Norbert was a lifelong member of St. Adalbert Parish and sang in the Polish Choir. He was a member of the Bendix Management and Retirees Clubs, St. Joseph Young Men’s Society, Z.B. Falcons, American Legion Post #357, Disabled American Veterans, and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid Chicago White Sox fan and coached for many years at Maurice Matthys Little League. He was also a longtime usher at the University of Notre Dame football games and enjoyed attending and watching ND football and basketball. He loved his cat “Coty”. Memorial Contributions may be directed to Pet Refuge or the Hospice Foundation. There will be no public visitation or services. A private family Catholic Funeral Service, Committal, and Military Service will take place. Norbert will be entombed in St. Joseph Cemetery. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
