Jan. 2, 1923 - March 4, 2013
GRANGER - Leo "Bud" J. Horwarth, 90, a lifelong area resident, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2013. Born January 2, 1923, he was the son of the late John M. and Kathryn (Yandl) Horwarth. On April 12, 1947, Leo married Gizella Kalmar. She preceded him in death September 1, 1995. He was also preceded in death by seven siblings, Josephine, Kathryn and John Horwarth, Agnes Berlakovich, Margaret Greisinger, Gertrude Hemmelgarn and Helen Lukasiewicz. Left to cherish his memory are four children, Michael (Jenny) Horwarth of Granger, JoAnn Layden of Mishawaka, William Horwarth of South Bend and Barbara (Richard) Jacques of Greenfield, IN; four grandchildren, Adam (Dayna Viele) Davis, and Sean (Melissa Brownbridge) Horwarth, Brandon (Nicole Miller) Horwarth and Courtney (Adam Gilson) Horwarth; three great-grandchildren, Halie and Bryce Horwarth, and Noah Gilson; one sister, Anna (Stephen Jr.) Elek of South Bend; and many nieces and nephews. Bud proudly served our country during World War II, where he was stationed in Germany and Japan. He retired from Sibley Machine & Foundry after 30+ years. After retirement, he worked part-time at Mishawaka Auto Auction. He loved Notre Dame football, the Cubs and NASCAR; but most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a longtime member of St. Monica's Catholic Church. Friends may call on Thursday, March 7, from 4-8 PM at the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel, 435 S. Ironwood Dr., South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday at 10:30 AM at St. Monica's Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Center for Hospice Care. The family would like to thank all the doctors that kept Bud going through the years -- especially Dr. Oppman, as well as the wonderful staff at the Center for Hospice.
